Field notes

The ingredients worth reading for

Labels on this shelf are crowded. These are the names that come up most in hair-loss conversations, with plain notes on what each one is.

Antifungal

Ketoconazole

An antifungal sold over the counter at 1% in Nizoral A-D, where it is the declared active ingredient for dandruff. It shows up in many dermatologists' hair-loss routines as a supporting shampoo. Some cosmetic shampoos include it at low levels without declaring it as an active.

Botanical

Saw palmetto

A palm-berry extract often discussed for its link to DHT, the hormone tied to pattern hair loss. In a rinse-off shampoo, contact time is short, so treat it as a supporting ingredient.

Stimulant

Caffeine

Popularized by Alpecin. Brands that use it usually ask you to leave the lather on for one to two minutes before rinsing.

Vitamin

Biotin

Vitamin B7. Common in thickening formulas for how hair looks and feels after washing. A deficiency is rare, and a shampoo is a topical product, not a supplement.

A shampoo is one part of a hair-loss plan. Treatments with FDA approval for pattern hair loss, such as minoxidil, are a separate category. If you are shedding more than usual, a dermatologist can tell you what is driving it.

Questions

Common questions

Can a shampoo regrow hair?

None of the cosmetic shampoos here are approved to regrow hair. People use them to keep the scalp clean and to support a routine that may include a treatment from a doctor.

Why does "no sulfates" matter?

Sulfates are strong detergents. Some people with a dry or sensitive scalp, or with color-treated hair, prefer gentler cleansers. Others do fine with them. It is a preference more than a rule.

Is price per ounce the right way to compare?

It is the fairest quick check, since bottles range from 6.4 to 16 oz. How much you use per wash and how often you wash matter too: some of these are meant for every other day.

How did you pick these eight?

They are the shampoos that come up most often in hair-loss forums, dermatology offices and retailer best-seller lists. We will add more as readers suggest them.
